Attendance at Westminster Health Forum Keynote Seminar

The report seeks approval for the Executive Member for Health and Housing to attend the Westminster Health Forum Keynote Seminar to be held on 19th November 2013 in London. 

 

The focus of the Westminster Health Forum Keynote Seminar will be the next steps for emergency care and the delivery of a 7 day NHS.

 

The context of the seminar will be:

  • The Prime Minister’s announcement that struggling A&E units are to be given a £500m bailout over the next two years;
  • Release of the Health Select Committee report on emergency care, which recommends more specialist units and better community services;
  • NHS England reviews on urgent and emergency care and seven day services, both due in the Autumn;
  • Ongoing roll-out of NHS 111 with NHS Direct seeking to withdraw from its contracts; and
  • Discussion around the role of the GP in out of hours care following recommendations by the Secretary of State and GPC, and negotiations for the 2014/15 GP contract.

 

Key discussion points will include:

  • Improving A&E performance – with Rt Hon Stephen Dorrell MP, Chair, Health Select Committee and former Secretary of State for Health;
  • The next steps for policy and the future for 7 day services – with Professor Keith Willett, Domain 3 Director, Acute Episodes of Care, Medical Directorate, NHS England;
  • GP contract, out of hours care and impact of reform on the workforce – with Dr Mark Porter, Chair of Council, BMA;
  • Developing new models of care: reconfiguring primary and secondary care – with Dr Anne Rainsberry, Regional Director, NHS England (London), Dr Chris Roseveare, Chair, Sub-Committee on 7 Day Provision, Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and President, Society for Acute Medicine, and a panel of experts;
  • Tackling the challenges of urgent and emergency care – with Nigel Edwards, Senior Fellow, The King’s Fund; and
  • Dealing with growing demand, commissioning, integration and the progress of Urgent Care Boards – with a panel of experts
